Research Paper

E-mail to the professor by midnight (or so) July 22, 2008

The research paper for this class is to be on a disorder or group of disorders of your choice.  For those who are in Dr. Lawrence’s medications class, I suggest you choose the same topic for both papers.  The papers cannot be the same, but you can use the same research for both.

The paper is to be prepared using the APA style, all words should be spelled correctly, and grammar should be correct.  The length should range between 15 and 20 pages not counting the title page or the reference pages.  If you don’t own the APA Manual, there are on-line resources as well as the writing center on the DBCC campus.

The paper should cover the following:

·      Etiology

·      Epidemiology

·      History of the disorder including any controversies about the disorder

·      Signs and symptoms

·      Course of the disorder, including prognosis

·      Cultural considerations

·      Differential diagnosis

·      Treatment options

Teresa, you are correct that it is due July 22 and that it needs to be e-mailed to me. If anyone wants to submit it early, I'll take it!

This may be a dumb question, but I was talking with a class mate and want to be sure of a couple of terms:

Etiology- the study of causation. I took this to be things like genetics, environment, parenting, etc.

Epidemiology The scientific study of the distribution, and control of disease in populations. I took this to mean who gets the disease -- who is diagnosed, men more than women? Is race a factor, etc.?

Am I correct?

Thanks -- I'd hate to get this wrong. Janine

Janine...thanks for asking the question...I too am a little insecure with the definitions of the terminology, especially
epidemiology. But...sounds like you hit on a very logical definition. What say Dr. Allgood?

Janine - You are correct. Etiology is simply how does this disorder happen - family, environment, brain disorder, etc. Epidemiology is who does it strike, where is it most likely, etc. Good question.
